King of Your Castle
Get lost in the streets of Lisbon then find yourself at home at the capital’s chicest new development.
Lisbon might just be the perfect European city. With more sunshine than Madrid, Athens, or Rome (plus a cooling breeze from the Atlantic come summer), and fabulous beaches at just 20-minutes from downtown, the Portuguese capital is one very special place. Lisbon offers all the traditional charms of old-world Europe – labyrinthine streets selling artisanal goods, ancient bars, and cultural hotspots – as well as all the trappings of new-world cool, such as hip design and modernist buildings. Call yourself a foodie? This is a gourmands paradise, a place where one can eat like a king for under a tenner; tuck in to platters of fresh seafood and local favourites such as bacalhau or salt-cod, and wash it down with a glass of ginjinha, a red cherry liqueur. And don’t even get us started on pasteis de nata, Portugal’s famous flaky pastry and custard tarts. Lisbon is also reckoned to be Europe’s second oldest capital, ruled by Romans, Germans, and Arabs before Portuguese crusaders conquered it in 1147. A history that reads like a who’s who of conquerors has left an intriguing legacy on Lisbon, evident in everything from the cuisine to local architecture. Adding to the fabric of this story is Castilho 69, a new seven-storey development within easy reach of the Avenida da Liberdade, and the elegant Marquês de Pombal piazza. Considered one of the most sophisticated neighbourhoods of Lisbon, this is most certainly a destination address, available to only a lucky few.
Castilho 69 is an impressive project, a magnificent exercise in urban restoration, that offers the elegance of Art Deco details with all the amenities of 21st-century luxury living. The ground floor will house a couple of select stores, while the residential space will be made up of twelve four-bedroom apartments, each spread over 272 square metres, making for a truly spacious urban development. No expense has been spared in ensuring that the apartments are completed to exacting standards, with fine-quality finishes and all the latest mod cons. Think Riga hardwood flooring throughout, Bulthaup kitchens with Siemens appliances, and worktops in softened Lioz stone. The interiors have been kept sleek and minimal, in a palette of soft neutrals that allow the space to breathe and ensure a tranquil retreat. To take advantage of Lisbon’s incredible climate, there’s a gorgeous rooftop terrace, affording incredible city views, as well as clever vertical landscaping, and a barbecue area for alfresco dining. Castilho 69 is truly a rare opportunity to live like a king in one of Europe’s most authentic and unspoilt capital cities. Set to complete in February next year, we can’t wait to see the finished product.
